I’m the first to admit, I’m a sucker for some good marketing… especially when it comes to health & beauty. Reverse wrinkles in 30 seconds: YES PLEASE. One magic pill for hair like Rapunzel: HELL YA. Drink this and instantly transform into Wonder Woman: I’M ON IT. Like many of you, however, my impulse to buy the latest and greatest came to a screeching halt as I continued to educate myself on the truth behind many products (not to mention their packaging) and the BIG business of “wellness”… or keeping people sick.

Aside from the chemicals IN the products, I was mortified when I found out that my beloved, shiny bottles & plastic EVERYTHING were leaching cancer-causing toxins, residues and chemicals into my food, drinks, skin care products, etc. As I thought of the 500,000 plus trendy water bottles I had purchased over the last year with hopes of increasing my electrolyte intake, balancing my PH level, or making me feel like a fitness queen post workout, I started to panic: Awesome, I’ve achieved a balanced PH but I’m going to end up with breast cancer. OK, OK… so maybe that is a bit morbid, but the truth is that plastic is wreaking havoc on our endocrine system and we must start making choices that actually leave us WELL rather than buying into marketing that tells us we will be well while making us SICK. Oh… and that fitness queen buzz I was vibin’ on when drinking my trendy brand water bottled in plastic completely crashed when learning that “BPA is known to disrupt hormones and can mimic the effect of estrogen in the body, leading to weight gain and hormone imbalance.” Uhhh… no thanks!

So what is the truth? How can plastic packaging be SO harmful? Let’s dig deeper at the chemicals in plastic and what they can do to the body.

Phthalates

Did you know that a specific signal programs cells in our bodies to die? It’s totally normal and healthy for 50 billion cells in your body to die every day! But studies have shown that chemicals called phthalates can trigger what’s known as “death-inducing signaling” in testicular cells, making them die earlier than they should. Yep, that’s cell death – in your man parts. If that’s not enough, studies have linked phthalates to hormone changes, lower sperm count, less mobile sperm, birth defects in the male reproductive system, obesity, diabetes and thyroid irregularities.

BPA

Some may say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but do you really want a chemical used in plastics imitating the sex hormone estrogen in your body? No! Unfortunately, this synthetic hormone can trick the body into thinking it’s the real thing – and the results aren’t pretty. BPA has been linked to everything from breast and others cancers to reproductive problems, obesity, early puberty and heart disease, and according to government tests, 93 percent of Americans have BPA in their bodies!

Time magazine presented a wealth of information in one of their articles titled These Plastic Chemicals May Be Just As Dangerous As What They Replace:

Researchers relied on urine and blood samples from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to look for a connection between DEHP replacements and various ailments. The research showed a strong relationship between high levels of the chemicals and both insulin resistance and blood pressure. Both of these conditions are associated with diabetes and other negative health effects.

DEHP is not the first chemical to be dumped because of negative health effects only for consumers to learn that the replacements are just as bad. Some manufacturers of consumer products have replaced BPA, another chemical found in plastics, after research has found it to be an endocrine disruptor that damages reproductive health, among other things. It turns out the replacements may have the exact same properties, some research has shown. Trasande says it shouldn’t come as a surprise that chemicals that behave the same way in plastic would have the same side effects. With both BPA and DEHP, replacement chemicals have a nearly identical chemical structure to the original, he says.

The rise of infertility and other diseases continues to increase each year. Doctors are quick to prescribe medications that come with a whole laundry list of negative side effects on the body. How about this: go to the source. Look at what you are cleaning your body and home with and look at how your foods and products are packaged. Are you feeding your children with plastic spoons, cups, plates, etc.? Are you storing their foods in plastic? STOP RIGHT NOW!!

So here’s the deal…when it comes to food storage… freaking buy glass! Use glass! Drink out of glass! Glass is 100% natural, 100% recyclable, which is why these Two Babes are sticking to glass for all our babes’, and your babes’, food. There are many other great alternatives, such as traditional silverware, bamboo & copper. It is TIME TO RESIST marketing and start acting. We have the power to change the health epidemic. Let’s start now!
